Clear Energy Systems is developing a small, lightweight, yet high-horsepower, natural gas engine for distributed power generation. The project involves modernizing and industrializing the Curtiss-Wright R1820 radial aircraft engine—a reliable and versatile workhorse of mid-20th century aviation. The task is to apply 21st century engine technology and manufacturing methodology to the original radial platform, creating a robust new power plant for industrial applications. The new engine will be coupled with a 1000kW generator in a compact generator set capable of 1MW standby, 900kw prime, or 750kW continuous power.Owing to the engine's unique size and configuration, the resulting 1MW genset is remarkably small and lightweight—roughly one-third the size and weight of conventional offerings. It introduces unprecedented mobility and versatility in its power range. The unit is light enough to tow behind a pickup truck, airlift by helicopter or install on rooftops and platforms with minimal structural support. Other key performance and cost advantages are equally important: fuel agility, the clean emissions of natural gas, long service intervals, reduced maintenance and overhaul cost, lower fuel cost than diesel, and lower capital cost than comparable natural gas units. We anticipate introducing the product at two-thirds the price of competitive units.
